It is true that there are less bass guitar players in the the world than drummers. As a consequence I've often found myself stepping in when bands needed a reliable bass player. My technical ability isn't at the same standard as my drumming but I am able to learn whole sets of music in a short amount of time, plus I can read bass clef if that's your preferred method. 

 

I started playing double in school orchestras and jazz bands because bass players were not available and there was always other drummers to play percussion instead. I don't own a double bass anymore but
I do have a lovely 5-string fender jazz that I love playing very much.

 

In the couple of decades since 'school' I have played for rock, funk and dixieland jazz bands.
